A Friend Like Jesus

Next Chapter: A Love Story

Clancy and my granddaughter, Soleil.Years ago there was a popular Christian song "You are Jesus to me." Well, I am very fortunate. I had a dear friend who was Jesus to me. He was patient with me, forgave my every harsh, unkind word or action and was always there for me — night or day. When I couldn't sleep at night and I sat in the living room at three in the morning, he would get up from his warm bed and join me — without comment, complaint or criticism. When I returned from a trip — short or long — he immediately was there to joyfully greet me, showing his great delight at my safe return home. When I ignored him, he continued to love me, hoping that I would notice him again soon.

Through his unceasing and unconditional love, he showed me that I, too, could love others, be patient with them, be faithful to them. Most important, however, is how he reminded me of what an amazing, wonderful, loving friend I have in Jesus.

By the way, what was my friend’s name? It was Clancy. He was a Golden Retriever and I know he is waiting to greet me when I get to Heaven.

Dear children, let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions. (1 John 3:18 NLT)

Dear Jesus, thank you for being a wonderful, constant friend. A friend to whom I can turn for help any time of day or night, with any problem or difficulty, for myself, my family, my friends, my Church, for anyone. Please help me to be as patient, as forgiving and as faithful as my friend Clancy. And, dear Lord, please don’t give up on me when I fail. Amen.

Questions for consideration...
  1. Am I a best friend to anyone?
  2. Is it necessary for the other person to think of me as their best friend?
  3. What is keeping me from being a best friend to more people?
  4. Can I change my life or my lifestyle so that I can be a best friend to more people?
