In the Old Testament story
from 2nd Kings, Naaman, commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was trying to get rid of his leprosy. Elisha, God’s Prophet, told him
to go wash himself — a small thing. So small that Naaman didn’t want to do
it. But when he finally did, WOW!!! What a blessing. If you haven't read the
whole story lately, look it up — 2nd Kings Chapter 5. It's a neat story.
Anyway, I often have the same problem myself — Hey Lord, ask me to do
something BIG FOR YOU and I will give it my best shot.
What?
You want me to phone someone and just say "hello"?
You want me to pop in and visit someone for five minutes?
You want me to mention my own problem as a prayer request in front of
everyone in Church?
You want me to attend a 60–minute committee meeting once a month?
You want me to do what???
Sorry, Lord, don’t have time, too busy, won’t work, too embarrassing, I
don’t know them well enough, they might not like it.
Boy, oh boy, can I ever come up with the excuses.
But once in a while I actually do what I’m asked. I do my small
task and that’s the end of it. But sometimes I later find out that my
small task was a huge blessing to someone, way out of proportion
to my effort. Then I really feel foolish for dragging my feet. Maybe next
time I won't drag them quite so much. |
