In Bondage To Sin |
Next Chapter:
Is Heaven Full of Dogs? |

In many worship services part of the prayers or liturgy
include a confession of sin. In many denominations the Pastor then reminds
us that God forgives us. But forgiveness is not enough.
If I am in bondage to sin, I also need freedom — freedom from my slavery
to sin. Otherwise, as a slave to the sin I will continue to sin. Where do I
find the release from this slavery? My question is the same one the Apostle
Paul asked. And, thank God, the answer is the same one the he found.
The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. |

I know I am rotten through and through so far as my old
sinful nature is concerned. No matter which way I turn, I can't make myself
do right. I want to, but I can't. When I want to do good, I don't. And when
I try not to do wrong, I do it anyway. (Romans 7:18-19 NLT)
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is
dominated by sin? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans
7:24-25 NLT)

Most merciful God, I confess that I am in bondage to
sin and cannot free myself. I have sinned against you in thought, word, and
deed, by what I have done and by what I have left undone. I have not loved
you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Forgive me, renew me, and
lead me, so that I may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the
glory of your holy name. Amen. |
Questions for consideration...
- First lookup and read the two primary commandments (Matthew 22:37–40)
and then the 10 commandments (Exodus 20:1–17).
- Am I in bondage to sin?
- Sin affects everyone it touches, not just the sinner. Who else is my
sin touching?
- Do I really want to give up my sin? After all, sin can be pleasurable.
- If I don't really want to give it up, am I at least willing to ask God
to be made willing?
Okay, I'll do it now...
Most merciful God, I am in sin and, I confess, deep in my heart I
really don't want to give it up. But, trusting in your love and mercy, I
am now willing for you to make me willing to give it up. Please help me.
Amen.
