It Takes Two To Weave

Next Chapter: Let Your Sins Be Strong

An English friend told me the following illustration of free will and God’s grace…

It takes two people to make a beautiful tapestry. The Master Weaver faces the front or upper side of the tapestry so that he can see the picture develop. The Assistant Weaver faces the back or lower side of the tapestry and puts in the colored threads as directed by the Master Weaver.

Once in a while the Assistant Weaver makes a mistake and puts in the wrong thread. However, instead of having the incorrect thread removed, the Master Weaver changes the picture.

So it is with our free will — God has a picture in mind when he creates us. However, because we are free to do as we wish, we sometimes put in the wrong thread. God then changes his picture to make the results of our mistakes a thing of beauty.

Sometime later I realized my Mother had this plaque hanging in her home…

The Weaver

My life is but a weaving between the Lord and me.
I know not the colors He weaveth steadily.
At times He weaveth sorrow and I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper and I the underside.
Not till the loom is silent and the shuttle ceases to fly
Shall He unveil the canvas and reveal the reason why
The dark threads were as needful in the weaver’s skillful hands
As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern that He planned.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4 NLT)

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (Romans 8:28 NLT)

Loving Father, help me trust that you are always in control, watching over my every step. And when things seem to go terribly wrong, help me to trust in you even more, knowing that you will turn everything to good if I love and trust you.

Questions for consideration...
  1. What dark threads are in my life right now?
  2. Am I fighting them, trying to remove them from my life?
  3. Can I trust God to make them into something beautiful?
  4. Can I think of any time in the past when God turned something awful into a blessing?
  5. How did that make me feel later?
