Stewardship Is Confusing

Next Chapter: Thankfulness For Little Things

I must admit that I often wonder about tithing.

You see, in 1977, at the age of 36, I made an informed decision to dedicate myself to God and turned over my life to Him—my entire life—family, money, house, car, job, clothes, dogs—everything.

Having done that, can I now stop at a 10% tithe? Should I worry if I give less than a 10% tithe? Is my 10% tithe based on gross income (before income taxes) or net income? What about gifts I receive? Do I figure them into the 10% also?

It is all so confusing. So troublesome. I just want to turn it ALL over to God and say "Here, take it all and give me back only what You want me to have."

But I don’t, because I’m still not a very good steward.

But I want to be.

I guess it all comes down to trust.

"Well, then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to him. But everything that belongs to God must be given to God." (Matthew 22:21 NLT)

Lord, help me to be a better steward of your many gifts by being willing to trust more in You. Amen.

Questions for consideration...
  1. How do I really feel about tithing?
  2. Is what I give "good enough"?
  3. How do I define "good enough"?
  4. How does God define "good enough"?
  5. Whose definition matters?
  6. Is there a way I can slowly narrow the gap between my definition and God?
  7. When do I start?
