The God Scale

Next Chapter: The Greatest Passion

No Diet Today -- Eating Fudge at Christmas -- John, David, Darlene, Joy and PaulAs I get up every morning, just before I take my shower, I find my way to the bathroom scales. I step on them and look to see the morning’s verdict—up a little, up a lot or, Praise God, no change from yesterday or, perhaps, maybe down a little. You see, I’m overweight. Not a lot, at least by my reckoning, but enough that I can’t just go and eat anything and everything. Darn. I sure do love good food.

Anyway, as I was contemplating the day’s verdict from the scales, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be neat to have a ‘Near To God’ Scale.” I could step on it and it would tell me how near to God I am today.”

Yeah, that would be neat, all right. But then I realized that such a scale would need only two markings on it—FAR AWAY and VERY NEAR. And once it changed from FAR AWAY to VERY NEAR, the scale would be forever stuck on VERY NEAR.

Why? Because God says that once we become one of His children, we are ALWAYS one of His children.

Once we are near to God, we are always near to Him, even when we don’t feel like it, even when we don’t feel He is near to us.

Now isn't that neat?

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan—this rebirth comes from God. (John 1:12-13 NLT)

Dear Father God, I thank you that I am one of your children and that when I feel far away from you, it is only my feelings and not reality because you really are very, very near to me—always. Help me, Father, to live my life today in full realization of the freedom and love that is mine because I am your child. Amen.

Questions for consideration...
  1. When was the last time I felt that God and I were far apart?
  2. What was happening in my life at that time to make me feel that way?
  3. How did I get over that feeling (if I ever did)?
  4. Can that feeling of being far from God ever be true? Can that feeling ever be trusted?
  5. If that feeling can't be true and cannot be trusted, how will my life change?
