Thirst For Righteousness |
Next Chapter:
Thoughts On A Mountain Stream |
When we are really, really thirsty, nothing quenches our thirst except
drinking something. Eating won’t do it, singing won’t do it, crying won’t do
it, yelling won’t do it. Usually a cool glass of fresh water does it best.
Jesus says we need to develop a thirst for righteousness. The same kind of
thirst we get after working all afternoon in the hot sun — a thirst that
food, singing, crying, yelling, even water won’t quench.
Why? Because then Jesus can give us His “living water” of righteousness
that quenches and fills all our thirst.
But, how do we create that thirst? Ah ha, that’s the tricky part. We
can’t. But Jesus can and He will if we ask Him.
To summarize, Jesus tells us to develop a huge thirst for righteousness
but to do that we must ask for His help. Once He gives us this thirst, then
He will fill us up.
And like drinking one glass of water on a hot day, once we drink it we
continue to become thirsty. Once we taste Jesus’ “living water” we will
continue to thirst for more. And He will provide it. |
God blesses those who are hungry and thirsty for justice,
for they will receive it in full. (Matthew 5:6 NLT)
Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Please
give me a drink." He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone
into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse
to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew,
and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?" Jesus
replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would
ask me, and I would give you living water."
"But sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket," she
said, "and this is a very deep well. Where would you get this living water?
And besides, are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well?
How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his cattle enjoyed?"
Jesus replied, "People soon become thirsty again after drinking this water.
But the water I give them takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a
perpetual spring within them, giving them eternal life." (John 4:7-14 NLT)

Lord Jesus, create in me an unquenchable thirst for righteousness that
only you can fill. Amen |
Questions for consideration...
- When was the last time I was really, really thirsty? How did it feel?
- What would it feel like to have a similar thirst for righteousness?
- Do I even want to experience such a thirst? How come?
