What Is Friendship?

Next Chapter: What's My Attitude?

My daughter Joy with her very close friend, Muffin.WOW, to give up your life for a friend. I might voluntarily die so that my spouse or my children or my grandchild might live. But for a friend? That's a really close, demanding, friendship.

But, you know, dying for a friend might actually be easy compared to living for a friend. Think what it means to live every day for a friend—being there when they need someone to talk to, helping out without being asked, supporting without taking over, helping without expecting even a simple "Thank you". And doing it every day if necessary. For me that is an even greater love.

I've had three friends who have loved me like that and I consider myself very fortunate. I also pray that I loved them that much in return.

"I command you to love each other in the same way that I love you. And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends." (John 15:12-13 NLT)

Lord, I pray that I will be a daily, loving friend again to someone else. SOON! Amen.

Questions for consideration...

  1. How many really close friends do I have?

  2. Do I truly love any of them?

  3. Do any of them truly love me?

  4. Am I ready to make the commitment necessary to be a true friend?

  5. If not, why not?

  6. If not now, when?
